Reverting back to Malay?
Its saddening to see that our government is going to change back Science and Maths into Malay language in the year 2012. English is a global lingua franca. I do not, cannot and will never understand WHY on earth are they reverting back.
Let common sense take over for a sec. How does ''widening the gap between rural and urban students'' and ''lack of proficient English speaking teachers'' be good enough a reason to abolish PPSMI after only just 6 years of implementation?
I know, the media says that lots of researches and studies have been carried out before making such drastic decisions. But base on all the reports shown, don't you think its evident that the pros outweighs the minute problems that could be ironed out over a period of time?
They say “The gap between rural and urban students has widened since PPSMI started." Answer to address this problem is to train more teachers, post them out to rural areas so that students there can pace up with the others! Yeah, easier said than done. However, its just a matter of time before we all start to go backwards again TOGETHER if we revert back to BM.
Did we not remember how much effort the government put in for this whole PPSMI thing to get going? All those textbooks, software written, teaching courses... We are the first country to have implemented such conversion from BM to English and the world is looking over us to see if we succeed. Now, 6 years and its already "proven" to be not effective???
All the while, both Science and Maths are thought in BM. To convert them into English and expect it to work out in 6 years is just like expecting me to turn into the King of Pop overnight. Its a big change. Big changes brings big implications, yes. That's why we have to give it more time. Many others and I reckon that the implementation of PPSMI needs at least 10 years to realize its full potential. Its just unfair to jump into conclusions assuming that "it just isnt working". My teacher told me earlier that they have already started writing the textbooks in BM 2 years ago. Does this mean that they actually realized how "ineffective" this whole PPSMI thing is just after 4 years of implementation? I am very ashamed to say that all of these are just pure bullocks. The government is listening to the wrong group of people for advice.
Okay, enough about WHY they are reverting it back to BM. Now lets look at HOW does reversing the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English policy be of any good to us? I honestly cant see why.
My brother, 9 years older than me, studied Maths and Science in BM. He was complaining about how much a hassle it was when it was all taught in BM. They had to relearn all the terms in English when getting into Uni, especially those scientific terms. Most of the words are directly translated into Malay, which makes it very confusing when trying to convert them back to English. Not easy. If we are going to study those subjects in English sooner or later, why bother teaching them in Malay and then make us relearn them in English? Makes no sense.
Dr Mahatir said that said his intention was to ensure that Malaysians were able to face global challenges at the earliest opportunity.
I am very much agreeing with all the things Dr Mahatir said HERE.
To further prove my points, you can read more about what the unhappy parents and students are saying. Many of them are thinking of transferring their students to private schools and to Singapore.
Yes, nobody said that making this whole PPSMI thing to work is anywhere close to easy. But at least dont give up so easily!!! :(
Downright furious and disappointed.

Photos: Sematang Sunset & Sunrise
Here, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mr Fong from Wixin Photography and his friends for making this trip a fun one. I learned a lot from the others. Made new (and crazily fun) friends :D
In this post, I would first post up photos of the sunset & sunrise of Sematang. When taking photographs of sunset & sunrise, there are a few things that I have picked up.
- Every second counts!- When it was 6 PM, I thought the weather today wasnt really good. To my surprise, as the sun set minute by minute, you can see how the whole atmosphere and mood of your photos can transform. The afterglows seemed to have produced a very nice pattern as it shone on the clouds while the sun itself hides behind the mountains.
- Be prepared- The clouds changes its patterns really fast. When the sun shines on it, the effects are very apparent. Not only the clouds, but also the water tide, boats that pass by etc.
- White Balance Marvel- The "orange-ness" you see in my photos are not as warm as it looks like. With some tips from my fellow friend, Paul Moh, he told me to play around with the White Balance. Setting it to "Shade" gave the whole photo a new mood. I tried a few types of presets and my advice is to not use Auto White Balance. Try the presets out one by one to find the suitable "mood" to your photo.
All the shots are shot using my good ol Nikon D40 + 18-55mm kit lens + 55-200mm VR + a Hoya CPL fitted on
*shots are not arranged in sequence

Photos: 620 Back to School Day
As the title implies, the event was held on 20th of June. Main objective of the event was to raise fund for the rebuilding of the new admin block and science lab.
Target: RM6.5 Million
Total amount raised to date: RM2.28 Million
SMK Kuching High is a goverment-aided school. Thus, the need to raise fund ourselves. It was a very tiring event. Whole day from 8AM- 4PM.

V.I.P. incl. the donors. The uncle of the left with a 'tongkat' donated RM150,000 :) Great thanks to him.

The scouts at their best. This Monkey Bridge is as tall as a 2 storey-building.
